Poor Diet Affects Hormones

What we eat can have a big impact on how we feel and how we look. Health experts say what we’re eating can also play a role on our hormones.

Dr. Cayce Jehaimi, a pediatric endocrinologist with Lee Health, says fast food, bagged food, and especially sugary food can have dangerous effects on our body and our hormones. “Food has become processed which means it has been manipulated in many, many ways.”

Processed food gives less nutrition and more calories and salt. “There’s a direct correlation between these types of foods and metabolic consequences, namely increased levels of insulin, increased blood pressure, increased symptoms of fatigue and lack of motivation in children,” said Dr. Jehaimi.

Doctors say poor diet can also cause behavioral problems in children. “There’s a lot of kids that are failing grades. There’s a lot of attention problems in kids. There’s a lot of anxiety among teens, especially girls. All of these– I think they are connected, often times more than 60 or 70 percent, connected to the diet,” said Dr. Jehaimi.

New studies show it can even cause hormonal changes in children. “Whether that’s early puberty in girls or delayed onset of puberty in boys,” said Dr. Jehaimi.

A hormone is a molecule that’s made by our body. It acts like a messenger, carrying signals to the cell with specific instructions. Doctors say those signals can be changed based on our diet. “Any plant or fruit or food as it goes through heating and preservations and modifications there’s a diminished potency of their nutrient value,” said Dr. Jehaimi.

That lack of nutrients affects our hormones, causing damage that can only be prevented through a clean diet of whole food and organic fruits and vegetables.

  2. funny how all these harmful chemical foods are FDA approved and able to be purchased by children. It’s almost as if the government wants to harm you and keep you weak and stupid.
